Why Real Police Oversight Is A Win for Everyone

At the recent City Council meeting, I had the opportunity to speak on a topic that is often framed as a "side vs. side" issue: Police Oversight. But as I shared with the council, oversight isn’t about being "anti-police." It is about being pro-community, pro-transparency, and pro-trust. When we ask for a system of checks and balances, we aren't asking for conflict; we are asking for a foundation of public confidence that benefits every single person in our city.
Building a Bridge of Trust
Trust is the currency of public safety. For the community, especially those who have felt unheard, a civilian-led oversight body provides a vital voice. It ensures that when something goes wrong, there is a clear, independent path to resolution.
Protecting the Best of the Force
One of the most important points I wanted the council to hear is that good officers should want oversight. * Accountability protects integrity: Clear standards help identify and remove those who don't meet the professional bar, protecting the reputation of the many who do.
Systemic Growth: Oversight isn't just about discipline; it’s about data. It helps identify gaps in training or resources that might be setting officers up for failure.
The Path Forward
Oversight is simply a mechanism for health. Just as we have audits for our finances and inspections for our infrastructure, we need a formal, transparent review process for law enforcement to ensure we are all moving toward the same goal: a safe, just, and united community.
Get Involved
I’m committed to keeping this conversation going. We need a system that ensures law enforcement operates with the full confidence of the public.
What do you think? How can we better support both our neighbors and our officers through accountability?
